As of version 7.66, the Aliasing module of Ektron is completely changed. In their newest release (v8.02) everything should finally be fixed. As there were still problems with the aliasing in multilingual websites, we are very happy as a Belgian web agency that those problems are gone.

Manual Aliasing

The manual aliasing in Ektron is easy to explain. You go to the content which you want to be more accessible and you give in the alias. For example you can modify a link to an interesting article from http://www.example.org/article.aspx?id=1234&LangType=2060 to http://www.example.org/goodarticle. Nothing more than that.

Automatic Aliasing

The automatic aliasing can be based on two levels. The source type can be either Folder or Taxonomy. If you base it on your folder structure, you can become SEO-friendly URL’s. It’s required that you’re folder titles are clear and descriptive. You can set the starting folder so not the whole structure will appear in the URL. At the end of the structure, the title of the content is added and so the URL is complete. Taxonomy aliasing works on the same manner, but here you specify the level in the taxonomy structure. Because we can assign multiple taxonomies (categories) to one content block, it is imaginable that there will exist more aliases for the content. This results in appearing in more search criteria.

Regular Expression Aliasing

The regular expression can be handy to use for aliasing blog-URLs. URLs as www.myblog.com/2010/11 should show all posts from November 2010 and this allows the advanced user to adjust the URL for exploring your blog.

Community Aliasing

Community aliasing can be efficient because it can provide a user friendly URL for a profile. It speaks for itself that the people and groups of your community have a higher score in search results when their name is in the URL.
